Foldable smartphones have gained immense popularity lately, thanks to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models with advanced display technology. Among the many brands that have jumped on this bandwagon is Xiaomi. Now, a Xiaomi foldable smartphone prototype has been leaked.
According to a report by Gizmochina, a renowned tipster, Kuba Wojciechowski, has posted pictures of an alleged Xiaomi foldable smartphone via his Twitter handle. One of the images shows the actual prototype of the smartphone, which was spotted two years ago and the other image shows one of the few units of the smartphone produced by the company.
Here are the images and other details we know about the Xiaomi phone on cards.
The Xiaomi foldable phone looks like the Huawei Mate X
The device appears to be similar to the Huawei Mate X series and joins the very rare outward folding smartphone screens. The Huawei Mate X line and the Royal FlexiPai line are among the few devices with an outward-folding screen. Xiaomi’s existing foldable phones, including the Mi Mix Fold and Mi Mix Fold 2, are both inward foldable because the outward folding mechanism is complex.
Now leaked images of the prototype as seen above show that this could be Xiaomi’s first release foldable smartphone. The photos show an intriguing design with the rear camera layout similar to that of the Huawei offering. It looks like there will be four rear cameras on the back.
In addition to this, some internal components of the device including its battery, circuitry etc. were also revealed. The tipster also noted that Xiaomi’s smartphone could be powered by a Snapdragon 856 SoC and an X50 5G modem.
Why Xiaomi’s foldable phone takes time?
Moreover, it has been reported that a few units of the foldable smartphone are already in the public domain but it has not entered commercial production yet. It seems that Xiaomi took a long time to create an outward folding smartphone for logical reasons. Although the company has not revealed details, it is believed to be on hold for sustainability reasons. An outward folding phone has to face more challenges than inward designs. It is less durable and prone to scratches, cracks and other damage.
