Intel, in partnership with VCX-Forum, announced the launch of the first consensus camera benchmark specifically targeted for video conferencing image quality named VCX-WebCam 2023. The Cross-PC ecosystem group raises the quality standards of PC image for videoconferencing with the new VCX-Webcam metric.

The VCX-WebCam 2023

To assess camera performance, VCX-WebCam 2023 simulates the harsh circumstances in which video conferencing technology is typically used. Modern evaluation techniques that work similarly to contemporary image processing algorithms serve as the basis for the tests. Testing focuses on common issues raised by consumers and industry experts during the development process and basic image quality issues.

The VCX Score comprehensively assesses the camera’s imaging performance with a focus on face-present and face-moving situations, auto exposure, white balance, noise, and spatial frequency performance. High levels of image quality are indicated by a high VCX score.

The VCX Forum’s Webcam Standards Division created VCX-WebCam 2023 with transparency in mind. This group, led by Anthony of Intel, used the expertise and knowledge of top OEMs, test labs, ISP vendors, and hardware and software vendors from across the PC ecosystem to create a specification that was both robust and transparent. They have received significant contributions from Dell, Image Engineering, Lenovo, HP, AMD, PAL Labs, Microsoft and many others.

While reflecting the typical end-user’s subjective experience, the results are objective to avoid human tester bias. Using VCX-WebCam 2023 paves the way for delivering reliable, realistic results that reflect how real users rate webcam performance and image quality.

VCX-WebCam 2023 to dramatically improve webcam performance

In all, Tony OrchardPresident of the VCX WebCam Standard Department and Senior Imaging Engineer at Intel, said he believes the VCX-WebCam 2023 will deliver dramatic improvements in webcam performance over the next few years, making video conferencing better for everyone.

“Using the vast industry experience of some of the most well-known companies in the PC ecosystem, we’ve modernized the way webcams are tested and built an objective rating system that correlates to user experience. I believe VCX-WebCam 2023 will deliver dramatic improvements in webcam performance over the next few years, making video conferencing better for everyone.
